Secrets Of The South Atlantic: South Africa & St Helena Family Safari

It was only recently that St Helena became accessible by air, with its airport opening up to commercial flights in 2017. This far-flung subtropical island is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK, where police wear bobby hats, the islanders are called ‘Saints’ and distinctive British red telephone boxes are still de rigueur. Following a Big Five safari in South Africa, you'll fly to St Helena to explore Jamestown, visit famous Napoleonic sites, set off on a postbox walk, hike to Diana’s Peak, and encounter humpback whales and pods of pantropical dolphins.

What makes this trip extraordinary

  • Embark on game drives through Kruger National Park, home to more large mammal species (147) than any other African game reserve.
  • Search for iconic African wildlife like the hippo, cheetah, impala and the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, black rhino and Cape buffalo).
  • Enjoy a family-friendly stay at Jock Safari Lodge, which offers an educational Kids on Safari programme.
  • Explore the cultural and historical sites of St Helena, including the final residence of Napoleon Bonaparte.
  • Search for endemic birdlife as you hike through the idyllic countryside.
  • Spot humpback whales breaching off the coast.
  • Sail and snorkel in the clear blue waters in search of marine life, including turtles, devil rays and dolphins.
